The Energy Detective can help cut energy costs

Stuart Kriendler, Travis Burland and Tre Govia of Bermuda Engineering.

An innovative product for both techies and technophobes, The Energy Detective (TED) is a great gift especially if you like helping family and friends save money.TED is a device exclusively distributed by Bermuda Engineering. The company has already made a mark installing solar hot water heaters and photovoltaic products on the Island, but recently won an award for their latest innovative product.“Like a cell phone that can tell you how much your phone calls cost, The Energy Detective does the same for your energy costs,” explains Stuart Kriendler, Bermuda Engineering’s general manager and solar specialist.Similar to an energy audit, which the company mainly do for larger organisations, TED can help homeowners identify what appliances in their homes are costing the most amount of money and then put in place practices to reduce those cost loads. Although small, the product is sensitive to as little as one watt, sensing when even just a light bulb has been switched on.“A lot of homeowners want to know how much energy they are using in their homes and where it is coming from, whether it be from a washing machine, fridge or pool pumps, but they don’t necessarily want to pay for a large energy audit,” Mr Kriendler says. “You can look at this as a great present for the techie, but also a great product for technophobes as it is really easy to use. The device helps you see how you can cut costs by conservation and efficiency in a very user-friendly package.”TED caught the eye of judges in the 2011 Technology Innovation Awards where they won the Best Use of Green Tech category.“It was quite an honour for us to receive the award and pretty impressive,” says Mr Kriendler. “My colleague Travis Burland (the company’s chief engineer) did a lot of research into the product and so far it has been a great find.”Bermuda Engineering was established in 1935 by Mr Burland’s great grandfather Gordon Burland, who had a wind turbine at his home in Paget. The company still have the blueprints for the solar hot water heater he had drawn up.Travis Burland and his father, Alan, revamped Bermuda Engineering and have continued to provide innovative products and services to the Island. For more information about installing TED in your home, contact the company on 292-2067 or info[AT]bermudaengineering.com
