You don’t have to be a sports lover to get in on the entertainment spectacle that is Super Bowl Sunday.

Millions of people will be glued to their television sets this weekend as the Denver Broncos take on the Seattle Seahawks.

But even if American football isn’t your thing, you can still get excited about the wings, beer and camaraderie — or just tune in for the funny commercials and highly anticipated half time performance by Bruno Mars.

Some people will be hosting their own game day parties, but if you’re looking to celebrate on a bigger scale, why not check out what local bars and restaurants have to offer?

Docksider’s will be having a big Super Bowl bash, complete with a host of special drink and menu items.

Everything from American hot dogs ($4), burger sliders and fries ($10) and beef ribs, fries and coleslaw ($20) will be on offer. Wings will be sold for $1 each, while pizza slices and nachos will be going for $3 and $14.75 respectively.

A bucket of Bud Light beer will available for $20, while a wing and beer combo will cost around $35.

If you can’t watch the game on their two large projector screens, owner Anthony White said you’re bound to see the action unfold on the 18 or 19 other small screens set up around the pub.

“Super Bowl is always a good time because everyone is watching the game,” he said. “We have a good following from NFL fans and are one of the few bars that show all the games leading up to the finale.

“For the past few Sundays we have been very busy, so Super Bowl being the final we expect for the house to be packed. We already have reservations coming in for small groups of 15 or 20 people.”

Out of the two teams, he said he would definitely be rooting for the Denver Broncos. “I just think they have a better chance and are a better team,” he said.

Football fans are encouraged to come out to Docksider’s an hour ahead of the kickoff at 7.30pm; with the festivities expected to continue right up to midnight.

Robin Hood Pub and Restaurant are also expected to have special prices for beer buckets and cocktails on game day.

They will have a Super Bowl platter on offer with a selection of appetisers and finger foods, as well as six or seven television screens showing the match.

Ralston Dezilva said the restaurant was expected to be more packed more than normal for the occasion. “Everyone comes to watch the game itself and combined with the specials it means people can come out and have a good time, rather than stay in and watch it at home.”

If you were hoping to see the game unfold at Outback Sports Bar at Flanagan’s, you might be out of luck. Manager Michael Sheehy said at the moment they were fully booked — and didn’t even have standing room available for patrons.

People who have already reserved their tables will have the chance to enjoy a variety of game-day menu items; while Goslings are also expected to be doing some giveaways throughout the night.

He said the popularity of the event boils down to it being the biggest game of the year.

“It’s the best two teams of the year and this time around it’s the #1 offensive team against the #1 defensive team in the sport competing to make it, so it’s bound to be a really good match,” said Mr Sheehy.

If you’re in the West End, it’s understood that Country Squire in Mangrove Bay, Somerset will have finger foods like chicken wings on offer for guests looking to watch the game.

While White White Horse Pub & Restaurant will be catering to St George’s residents, and plan to have two for one specials on bottle beers purchased during the game.

They are also offering a 10 percent discount on all food bills; as well as an appetiser platter with mozzarella sticks, wings, french fries and chilli nachos for $19.95. A spokesman for the eatery said they would be showing the game on several big screen TV’s in the pub area.

However, it’s recommended that people make reservations in advance, by calling 297-1838.

Swizzle Inn at Bailey’s Bay will be showing the special game on their five HD flat screen televisions.

The restaurant will also have buckets of beer and pizza specials for in-house customers.

In addition, they are offering take out specials on four kinds of wings — Buffalo style, Asian Sesame, Spicy Gombey or Honey Garlic — ranging from $20 for 25 wings to $56 for 75 wings.

Or people can take out their Johnny’s Butt Kickin Chili, made with diced sirloin beef and Jalapeno corn bread; or Build your own Nachos — where Swizzle Inn will supply the chips and toppings and you just heat it up at home.

The chilli ranges from $35 (for five portions) to $140 (for 20 portions), while nachos are $28 for six to eight people.

You have to pre-order today by calling 293-1854 and can pick up your dishes on Super Bowl Sunday.

A bit of game-day spirit

Planning your own Super Bowl bash? Here are a few tips to help you get into the game day spirit ...

1. Pick a team you want to support and decorate your house in those respective team colours. If you are cheering for the Seattle Seahawks use blue, navy, neon green and white balloons to set the tone of the evening. Or if it’s the Denver Broncos you’re supporting, reach for the orange, navy and white streamers in honour of your favourite team. Try decorating different sides of your living room in different colours, if you have different guests who root for opposing teams.

2. Stock your fridge with lots of easy finger foods for your guests to enjoy. This isn’t the best night to try out your French culinary skills, people want finger foods like pizza, wings and beer that they can enjoy while watching the game. If you have a large group coming over, try and pick up a veggie platter or buy some cheese and cold cuts and let people make their own deli style sandwiches on the commercial breaks.

3. Have a friendly wager. Get everyone to write down which team they think will win and what the final score will be before the game starts. If everyone puts in $5, the winner can walk away with a little cash prize. Or you can pick up a small prize to give the lucky winner instead.
