The event took place at the first hole of the Belmont Golf and Country Club on Sunday and although there were no holes-in-one, competition was tight with Phil Martin edging out Mike Shaw by half an inch for Division IV (men's open) and overall honours as his ball came to rest within one foot, six inches of the hole.
Among the seniors, Ed Johnson was most accurate. His tee shot ended up two feet, eight inches away from the cup, nine inches closer than runner-up Des Walker's drive.
Leading the way for the juniors was Craig Brown (two feet, nine inches) competing in the 13-17 year bracket. Twelve-year-old Quinton Sherlock, Jr.
(three feet, three inches) was also impressive in taking Division IB honours as was 10 and under competitor Eric West (three feet, 111 inches).
At last check the sponsorship was $12,755 and further donations toward prizes and golf balls to benefit the BJGA should push the overall total to $14,755.
BASKETBALL BAS Tucker's Tees won their opening game in the Bermuda Basketball Association summer league on Monday night by beating CableVision 58-42.
Tees were on control from the start as they had 25 rebounds, including 14 offensive rebounds with Hannah grabbing nine boards to go with 16 points.
Sampson had 15 points in support.
For CableVision, Rick Santos led the way with 17 points as he also was the leading rebounder with eight rebounds. Manning had 16 points.
The second game of the night saw St. George's Express beat Warwick Academy 52-33 with Jonathan Eastmond scoring 16 points and Elliott Pitcher, Jr. 12 points for the winners. Ralph Scott and Jazane Smith each had 10 points for Warwick Academy.
Fire Services beat Bank of Bermuda 41-28 with Scott Quin and Lamont Williams each getting 10 points for Fire Services and Ellis Wilkinson and Sam Brangman seven each for Bank of Bermuda.
EQUESTRIANISM RAH The Bermuda Equestrian Federation (BEF) plans to send three riders to compete in a Junior Horse Show in Jamaica from August 17-22.
Several Central American and Caribbean countries have received invitations to send one rider in each of three age categories -- seven to 11 years, 12 to 13, and 14 to 18.
They will be riding ponies and horses provided by local owners and will be competing in dressage and show jumping.
Any riders interested in being considered must apply in writing to the BEF Committee, P.O. Box FL 166, Flatts FL BX or hand deliver application to Hinson Hall Stables by July 1.
SAILING SLG Rudy Bailey in Temptation won the West End Sailboat Club's three-race comet regatta for the Marsha L. Trophy on Sunday with three firsts for two-and-a-quarter points.
Eight boats represented the three clubs with Stevie Dickinson, sailing with David Wall in Tango , placing second with two seconds and a third for seven points while Howard Lee in High Yella was third on eight points from two thirds and a second.
Gladwin Lambert in Melody was fourth on 13 points while Darrin Heyliger in Silent Rage (17) and Howard Simmons in My New Mary (19) completed the top six.
The regatta took place in 18 to 20-knot winds.
