Lambert takes comet title West
The sailing duo of Gladwin Lambert and Greg Proctor were left singing sweet after clinching a maiden Lawrence (Stickers) Hendrickson Memorial title on the North Shore.
Onboard the distinctive green hull of West End Sail Boat Club stalwart Lambert and crew Proctor swept all three races of the annual comet regatta, named after the late Mid Atlantic Boat Club founding member.
?It is an honour to finally win this regatta that I have competed in many times over the years,? a victorious Lambert told .
? . . . what made it even more special was the fact that Hendrickson?s son (Naniko Hendrickson) and cousin (Venicia Raynor) also competed for the first time.
?This was the first time Lawrence?s son skippered his father?s boat in this regatta. The family have held on to Sticker?s boat for years and refused to sell it in hope that one of his sons would sail one day.
?And that?s what made my victory all the more special on this particular day.?
Lambert and Proctor set the tone for the remainder of the proceedings when they seized line honours in the opening race by a comfortable margin over rival Howard Simmons.
Home town favourite George Hayward placed third.
Race two proved to be a repeat of the first as Lambert again mastered the shifty ten to 12 knot south-west breezes to score his second bullet that ultimately clinched the regatta.
Hayward improved upon his first race performance to claim second place while Simmons grabbed a second podium finish of the day.
The afternoon?s third and final race again saw sail away with line honours by a comfortable margin to send the coveted trophy on its way to the West End for the first time in several years.
Up and coming skipper Anthony Smith raised eyebrows by finishing second in the final race while Simmons capped a superb regatta with his third straight top-three finish.
Defending champion Steve Dickinson and perennial rival Rudy Bailey did not compete.
?I always managed to get to windward first in every race and gradually increased my lead after that. So you can say it was pretty much smooth sailing out there,? Lambert added.
?There were times we had some very close racing, especially on the first leg. But it was very important to get a good start and try to get to windward first.?
