New lawyer is following in her mother’s footsteps
A Call to the Bar ceremony was a double-header for law firm Appleby when two new lawyers joined the ranks specialising in corporate law.Janine Carey was one of two attorneys to appear before Chief Justice Ian Kawaley last week. She joined Bermuda’s legal fraternity with fellow colleague Seth Darrell in a ceremony held in the Commercial Court where there was standing room only.Ms Carey was following in the footsteps of her mother who became a member of the Bermuda Bar 18 years ago.At the ceremont Ms Carey acknowledged Appleby partner Kiernan Bell in her speech to the large audience gathered. She also thanked the partners at Appleby and the mentoring committee for giving her the opportunity to train at their firm.“I recall David Lines stating in my interview ‘you will have the opportunity to work with some of the best lawyers out there’,“ she said in her address.“And I definitely believe those words stand true; I have had the chance to receive the highest standard of legal training at Appleby.”Ms Carey also acknowledged partners Vanessa Lovell Schrum and Brad Adderley in particular for his “no nonsense nature”.“Although it was overwhelming in the beginning, I personally believe there was no better mentor to have as a new trainee. Brad never gave me the opportunity to fall victim to those ‘new trainee in a big firm’ jitters.“I quickly learned to get over any anxiety and as he would constantly tell me, “just get it done! I am also grateful for my current mentor Vanessa; although I have only been under her mentorship for a short period of time, I would like to thank her for her warm and supportive nature, guidance and support,” she said.Last but not least she thanked her parents for their “understanding and support”. “Specifically, I would like to thank my dad for never letting my procrastination get the best of me,” she said.“He was always there to forward me university, scholarship and job information, constantly reminding me of deadlines and campaigning for me to be the next summer student at various firms and offices. I appreciate all his support throughout my educational and legal career and for giving me that extra push whenever it was needed.“My mother has always been a strong and independent figure in my life. I have always looked up to her courageous and self-assured nature and aspire to possess these traits myself. In closing she said: “I am truly honoured to follow in my mother’s footsteps and become a member of the Bermuda Bar as she did 18 years ago. I can only strive to be as competent a lawyer as her. I would like to thank her today for being my continuing inspiration.“I would like to say that I believe my life and path has already been mapped out for me and here, standing before you today, is exactly where I am supposed to be.”
