BHS celebrates Literacy Week
Bermuda High School pupils and staff dressed up as their favourite book characters today to mark World Book Day.
The event — part of the school’s Literacy Week celebrations — saw little Harry Potters, Dr Seuss characters, fairytale standards, modern characters such as Katniss Everdeen and classics such as Juliet Capulet.
A spokeswoman explained that each day of Literacy Week was themed in the primary department, with surprise guests stopping by to read to the girls.
The included John Rankin, the Governor, national security minister Wayne Caines, Mary Ellen Koenig, the US Consul General, shadow national security minister Jeff Baron, chef Teneika Eve, author Nadia Aguiar, Bermudian Olympic diver Katura Horton-Perinchief, author Dwayne Caines, police commissioner Michael DeSilva and chief inspector Na’imah Astwood.
Secondary pupils also hosted a “Battle of the Books” with the four final entries down to Wonder, The Hunger Games, A Wrinkle in Time and The Book Thief.
Middle School students chose Wonder, and The Hunger Games won in the 14 plus category.
Pupils school-wide took part in book swaps and created book posters.
Secondary Librarian Lynn Furtado, with help from students, transformed the library into Hogwarts, complete with moving pictures from the The Daily Prophet on the wall.
The Bookmart and Brown & Co will host the first BHS Book Fair to top off the week.
The fair will run from today until Sunday to help the school restock its primary and secondary libraries.
Customers who purchase a book for BHS will receive 20 per cent off their Bookmart purchase and BHS will receive 5 per cent of the total sales to purchase more books.
