Facebook fugitive said to be suspect in Westgate stabbing

Westgate is on lockdown after a prisoner was stabbed.

A sex offender remained in hospital yesterday after being stabbed in prison by a man serving time over two gang shootings.Sean Evans a 23-year-old barber from Somerset — was locked up for two years in August for having sex with a 15-year-old girl.He reportedly sustained a stab wound to the chest inside Westgate Correctional Facility on Wednesday while leaving an anger management class. The Royal Gazette learned from multiple sources yesterday that the suspect in the case is Alvone Maybury nicknamed the Facebook Fugitive after an escape from custody in 2010.Maybury, 26, is serving a 13-and-a-half year sentence for shooting at Parkside gang members on Reid Street, Hamilton. When he was first brought to Magistrates’ Court to be charged with the offence, he escaped prison guards, then taunted the authorities via his Facebook page while on the run.He is also serving a nine-year sentence, concurrent to the first, for a gangland plot to shoot well-known Court Street figure Raymond (Yankee) Rawlins.Commissioner of Corrections Edward Lamb once used Maybury as an example of many young men who are in Westgate for firearms offences. He said the men lack a father figure and have never been told they are loved.Lt Col Lamb said when Maybury was brought back to Westgate after his time on the run, he told him “you are a beautiful and decent young man and we all make mistakes”, before hugging him and telling him he would be a father figure to him.Prison authorities and police remained tight-lipped over the Westgate stabbing yesterday, refusing to give any details, identify those involved or say whether any arrests had been made. Lt Col Lamb was on leave.Asked if it was usual for sex offenders to mingle with the rest of the prison population, Acting Commissioner of Prisons Keeva Joell-Benjamin said: “We assess the risk related to the inmate. The type of offence is considered along with any type of threats to the inmate.”Ms Joell-Benjamin referred this newspaper’s questions about the stabbing to Government’s Department of Communication and Information, which did not provide any comment on the matter by press time.Evans was listed as being in stable condition on a general ward at King Edward VII Memorial yesterday, having undergone surgery.Minister of Justice Kim Wilson said on Wednesday that an investigation had been launched. She thanked “the hard working members of the Corrections Department for their swift action in getting control of the situation”.Her comments were echoed yesterday by former chairman of the Prison Officers’ Association Craig Clarke who said such incidents are “very rare”.He added: “This takes place in other jurisdictions on a far higher scale. I think the officers are doing a great job dealing with it.”The current chairman of the POA, Dennis Brown, could not be reached for comment.
