Cox leads blue team to victory in All-Star clash
Ebonie Cox was in fine scoring form for the blue team in their 39-23 win over the reds in the Bermuda Netball Association All-Star Weekend senior match at Bernard Park on Saturday.
Cox notched 27 goals in her side’s convincing victory, with team-mate Jahkenya Trott adding another 12 to the scoreline.
Kaamilah Nasir, the red team’s MVP, top scored for her side with nine goals and Danielle Raynor contributed eight. Naomi Taylor picked up the MVP award for the blue team.
Deborah Saltus, the blues’ coach, described her side’s victory as a “real team effort” and was impressed by the hunger they showed for the win.
“Having been away from the netball arena for a little while and asked to come back, not knowing how each of the players play, I had a little bit of guidance from those familiar with them,” said the former Bermuda player.
“The team I put out in the beginning was one the one that really pushed us to get ahead. They went out there wanting to win and they played really well.
“We had a little lull in the third quarter but took it away in the fourth quarter and that’s how we wanted to finish.”
Saltus, who said she did not know whether she would be returning to the netball scene for good, was fulsome in her praise for her more senior players.
“When you look at some of our senior players, Ebonie Cox, Dominique Richardson and Naomi Taylor, they were all phenomenal,” she added.
“It’s the first time we’ve been together today and it was a real team effort.”
Anthony Mouchette, the coach for the red team, took plenty of positives from his side’s display despite the defeat.
“I was quite pleased with my team’s performance,” said Mouchette, the Bermuda assistant coach.
“It was quite strange as the blue team had six national team players, who I train twice a week, so it was hard not to cheer for them! Considering we hadn’t trained or played together before, I was extremely pleased and I thought the harmony was there. We started to get things together in the second and third quarter.”
In the under-12 match the red team, coached by Zariah Armory, beat the blue team, coached by Zakiyah Durham, 13-9. Amaya Burt, who was chosen as MVP for the reds, led the scoring with five goals, as team-mates Dayla Richards and Sanaa Berkeley contributed four goals each.
Kemaurie Darrell, who was named MVP for the blues, top scored for her team with four goals.
The blue team, coached by Gina Benjamin, defeated the red team 18-16 in the under-16 game, with Gabby Romaine scoring ten goals for the winners. Amaiah Butterfield led the scoring for the reds with 11 goals. Romaine and Butterfield were named as the MVPs for their teams.
