A 32-year-old man was today fined and banned from the roads for driving while impaired by alcohol.

Luis Correia, of St George’s, pleaded guilty to the offence, which happened on December 10 last year in Paget.

The court heard that police officers stopped Correia on South Road near the junction with Cataract Hill at 2.30am after they saw a white car overtaking traffic at high speed.

They spoke to the defendant and could smell alcohol on his breath, his eyes were glazed and he was unsteady on his feet.

Asked if he had been drinking, Correia said: “Yeah, three or four beers.”

He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined him $1,200 and disqualified Correia from driving for 18 months.

Also in court, 25-year-old Ashton Stephens was fined $800 and given ten demerit points for driving without due care and attention during rush hour on October 26 last year.

The court heard that officers saw Stephens, of Pembroke, overtaking vehicles while there was oncoming traffic near Lovers Lane at 5.57pm.
