600 jobs to be available at jobs fair

More than 600 jobs in the hospitality industry will be available at a job fair next week, Economy Minister Kim Wilson announced.Ms Wilson said that all categories of positions will be available at 14 hotel properties, ranging from entry level positions to skilled and managerial positions.“Unlike past job fairs, the industry has come together to document exactly how many available positions exist in each category at each property,” she said.“I must say, I was pleased to learn of so many job opportunities that the hotels are hoping to fill with Bermudians, jobs ranging from conference managers, reservations and front desk staff, maintenance technicians, room attendants, servers and more.”A list of the available positions will be posted on a Job Board, together with the job requirements, along with the number of positions available. She said some of the job positions are vacant now, while others will become available before the start of the next tourist season as a result of expiring work permits.“All of the jobs will be open for application at the job fair and suitably qualified Bermudians will be considered,” Ms Wilson said.“In some areas, training programmes will be offered to prepare interested persons to qualify for the available jobs, particularly in the server category.”She said one of the intended aims of the hospitality fair was to help unemployed individuals reinvent themselves for the job market by either starting a programme to update their skills or taking a job that might be below their skill level while learning the skills to move to a better paying position.Ms Wilson described the hospitality industry as exciting and diverse, offering opportunities in a wide range of fields.“The hospitality industry pays well, and those who have the right qualities are afforded the opportunity to rise through the ranks,” she said.“It’s an exciting field, never boring and offers unlimited opportunities. And it is a wonderful way to give back to our country by being ambassadors for Bermuda.”The last Hospitality Job Fair, held in February, drew more than 800 applicants for 155 positions. However, it was later revealed that of the 836 people who sought jobs at the fair, only five people applied for the more than 100 waiter positions. Two of those applications were successful.John Harvey, of the Bermuda Hotel Association, said those who do well in entry level positions in the hospitality industry have a range of opportunities for promotions within the industry. While not everyone may find a server position attractive, he said it could serve as a foot in the door for positions in other areas of the industry.“It’s all about attitude, this industry,” he said. “I hear general managers talking all the time about how all they need is a smile. Then you are there. Think of this industry as a career, not as a hustle.”The job fair will be held on Tuesday, November 1, at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess between 10am and 4pm.Those taking part are advised to bring ten to 12 copies of their resume on the day of the fair. Those who require assistance producing a resume can visit the Department of Labour and Training during business hours to take advantage of the complementary computer centre.
