Lovren cops blame from Klopp

Given the runaround: Dejan Lovren, left, struggled mightily against Harry Kane last weekend (Photograph by Frank Augstein/AP)

So let’s get this straight. One of the wealthiest clubs ever, featuring one of the costliest teams, led by a widely recognised doyen of football coaching, couldn’t score against Wolves ... because of the ball.

It’s a bit like Roger Federer saying he didn’t win the US Open because the ball was too fluffy, or Manchester United putting a dire first-half performance down to a grey kit. Oh, wait. That really happened.

Still, full marks for effort. Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp didn’t even bother to get creative last weekend, pinning the team’s disaster against Spurs on one man, Dejan Lovren.

The Reds were undone by a Spurs team looking better and better. Whether they can continue their hot streak against a United team that’s become as defensive as their manager’s press conference will be fascinating.

Finally, a huge shoutout to the team called #Problem who are eighth in the October standings and managed by one Nahki Wells. You know he’s a serious Fantasy Football player when he doesn’t pick himself until he’s actually fit.

11am kick offs unless stated

Saturday

Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur

8.30am

United, who have a 100 per cent home record, have the questions to answer here after failing to attack against Liverpool, getting lucky at Benfica and being humbled by Huddersfield.

Spurs, who have a 100 per cent away record, will view this as easier than a trip to Real Madrid and will fancy their chances. Deadlock. Prediction: 1-1

Arsenal v Swansea City

The Arsenal AGM sounded liked a laugh a minute. Stan Kroenke once again proving he has less charisma than Claude Puel. More of that later. Arsène Wenger should oversee three points here. Prediction: 3-0

Crystal Palace v West Ham United

Palace lurched back to crisis mode in midweek with an embarrassing Carabao Cup defeat, while the Hammers lurched away from embarrassment with a stunning 3-2 win over Spurs.

Whoever staves off another crisis will win. Insight. Prediction: 2-1

Liverpool v Huddersfield Town

Some cracks are appearing in Klopp’s manic grin and calling out a senior player will not endear him to many. He must also carry the can for what has been an underwhelming start to the league season.

The story here is his reunification with best buddy David Wagner, a mini Klopp who is growing in stature. Home win is favourite but this is ripe for an upset. Prediction: 2-1

Watford v Stoke City

Troy Deeney may look like a slightly too heavy middleweight but he is a key part of an impressive Watford side, who were unlucky to get beaten at Stamford Bridge.

Well-drilled, the Hornets are expected to beat a Stoke side still relying on a Crouchie toe-poke late on. Prediction: 3-1

West Bromwich Albion v Manchester City

If they don’t play with a Mitre ball, City will win. Otherwise ... Prediction: 0-2

AFC Bournemouth v Chelsea

1.30pm

Call it South Coast bias from yours truly, but Bournemouth always look close to a team that could rocket up the table. Last week’s win at Stoke showed they have a little more than, well, Stoke.

Expect the home team to cause some early problems for Chelsea before the Londoners stretch the game and bag the three points. Prediction: 1-2

Sunday

Brighton & Hove Albion v Southampton

10.30am

Reports suggest Southampton’s last match against WBA was about as exciting as a Claude Puel press conference, more of that soon.

This doesn’t promise to be a thriller. Prediction: 1-0

Leicester City v Everton

1pm

Speaking of Mr Puel, he’s back. A man who looks like he’d enjoy a lawnmower convention but who, everyone seems to forget, has won Ligue 1 and taken Lyons into the Champions League.

Compare that to Ronald Koeman, who was this week sacked by Everton, and he suddenly could be an inspiring choice.

Koeman’s gone, though, so Everton’s chances appear improved enough to nick a point. Prediction: 1-1

Monday

Burnley v Newcastle United

5pm

Burnley’s home form is not matching up to their away form, surprisingly. They should have too much Premier League knowhow for a steady Newcastle side. Prediction: 2-0
