Legion appeals for volunteers
With Remembrance Day approaching, volunteers are urged to help with the Bermuda Legion’s poppy appeal to honour the island’s war veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The Legion’s fundraising drive runs from November 1-11 and relies on the community’s help, according to case worker Carol Everson.
“All of Bermuda’s remaining war veterans and widows benefit from the poppies, and we would really appreciate anyone who can volunteer time to help distribute poppies in our tag day in Hamilton on November 8, as well as at retail outlets around the island,” Ms Everson said.
“We’re very lucky to have the valuable help of Royal Bermuda Regiment staff, but it would be a great help if we can get further volunteers.”
Ms Everson also thanked David Gibbons for allowing the Legion to use his premises at the corner of Reid and Queen Streets for a pop-up shop, which will also require volunteers.
Meanwhile, anyone requiring wreaths or poppies for churches or schools should contact the Legion, which would be “very glad to provide them”, she said.
Ms Everson added: “Anyone who knows of a vulnerable war veteran or widow should get in touch, as we will be running our Christmas gift programme, which went to 104 homes last year.”
