Lead stage role for star Herbert

Festival appearance: Daren Herbert in The Music Man

Bermudian actor Daren Herbert takes the stage once again for a prestigious lead role as part of next year’s Stratford Festival.

Playing the loveable scoundrel Harold Hill in The Music Man at the Stratford Festival, one of Canada’s top arts galas, marks a coup in the career of Mr Herbert — even after shows such as The Wild Party and roles in films including Dreamgirls.

“It’s great — everything fell into place,” Mr Herbert told The Royal Gazette of his Stratford debut, which runs from May to November in 2018.

The main role is already a familiar one for Mr Herbert, who has done the musical before in Vancouver.

The festival is an especially prominent event: staged by North America’s largest classical repertory theatre company, it attracts international attention.

For Mr Herbert and his wife, Joanne Darrell Herbert, spending the substantial gig in Stratford will mark a happy break from Toronto life.

In May, the couple welcomed their daughter, Ori, and Mr Herbert said that “a year in Stratford will give her a good place to stretch her legs”.

“Any Bermudian who wants to pop by is more than welcome,” Mr Herbert added.
