College reschedules events after tragedy

The Bermuda College will remain closed for the remainder of the week and College counsellors will be on hand for student support in the wake of the tragic death of Andrea Trott Bicarie, believed to be killed instantly when a section of an embankment collapsed onto her car Tuesday morning.

College faculty and counsellors were there to help students who had gathered to watch the heart-breaking drama unfold yesterday morning. College counsellors will also be available to provide grief support and trauma counselling for students and staff at the Evangelical Church Hall on Mission Road, Paget, on Thursday afternoon between 1-3 p.m., and Friday between 10 a.m. and 12 noon.

"It's important that students, faculty and staff be given the opportunity to release the types of emotions commonly associated with such tragedies," said Director of Student Success Sheridan Talbot. "Our counselling staff will be available to talk with them and help them get through this."

The College supports the Bermuda Police Service in its efforts to limit access to the campus as much as possible during the next few days while the investigation continues, and is appealing for public cooperation in this matter.

Sports conference venue changed

A sports conference initially planned to be held at the Bermuda College on January 24 and 25 has been moved to the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel in light of the tragic events which took place at the College yesterday.

"As Minister of Community Affairs and Sport, I would like to add my voice to the sincere and heartfelt condolences that have already been sent to the family of The Education Centre paraprofessional Mrs Andrea Trott Bicarie," said Sport Minister Randy Horton.

The Ministry of Community Affairs and Sport are still asking for sporting bodies and their representatives to make a special effort to attend the sporting conference because their participation and perspective is integral to the success of the event.

The theme of the conference is Ethics in Sport, and highlights will include keynote speaker Mr. Dan Doyle, who will lead the workshop sessions in the drafting of an ethical code that will guide all our sporting bodies.

Friday's registration begins at the Hamilton Princess at 5.30 p.m. Opening and introductory remarks by Sport Minister Randy Horton will start at 6 p.m., and the Saturday session gets underway at 9 a.m.

SATs postponed one week

The Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SATs) have been post-poned for one week in light of the tragic death of Education Centre paraprofessional Andrea Trott Bicarie when a section of embankment collapsed on her car while it was parked at the Bermuda College yesterday.

The College has been closed down for the remainder of the week, necessitating a change in venue for the SAT examination, which was to take place on Saturday in the College's South Hall.

The College has obtained permission from the Educational Testing Service to post-pone to standardised international test for one week. The SAT exam will now be held on Sunday, February 1, in South Hall. Check-in time remains 8 a.m.

Eden Film workshop seeks new venue

The Last Chance for Eden Film and Discussion Workshop, presented by the Diversity Institute and CURE, will not be being held at the Bermuda College on January 24.

The workshop will still go ahead on January 24, however organisers are trying to arrange an alternate venue.

All those wanting to attend are urged to call the CURE office on 296-0613 for further information.
