Mental lapses cost us dearly, says Trott
Nathan Trott, the West Ham United Under-23 goalkeeper, blamed mental lapses and fatigue after his team suffered a third straight defeat in the Premier League 2 at home to Liverpool on Monday.
Liverpool dominated the match and might have come away with a wider margin of victory had it not been for a string of saves by Trott either side of the interval.
“I’m always happy to make saves and contribute to the game,” Trott told the West Ham website. “But ultimately, we’re not happy with the result. We need to keep the shots against us a lot lower if we’re to win.”
Liverpool won the match at the Chigwell Construction Stadium 2-0, with winger Harry Wilson bagging both of their goals in the first half.
“We were organised at times but we need to be more focused if we’re going to win games against teams like this” Trott said.
“Everyone put in lots of work in the first half and we definitely improved in the second half, I just think we tired from not having too much of the ball.”
West Ham squandered a golden opportunity after falling behind 2-0 when striker Toni Martinez had a penalty saved.
“Toni’s penalty was unlucky, it was a good shot but unfortunately the keeper went the right way,” Trott said.
“We had a couple more chances and if we had put some of them away the game would have been a lot different to how it ended.”
West Ham’s Under-23 side have not won since recording a 5-2 home victory over Swansea on August 27.
Monday’s match with Liverpool was Trott’s first appearance for the East London club since returning from international duty with the England Under-20 squad.
The Bermudian kept a clean sheet to cap a memorable debut for England Under-20 in their 3-0 win over Holland during the recent international break.
Trott, a former BAA goalkeeper, was part of the England Under-19 squad that won the European Championship in Georgia during the summer.
