Holiday season passes without gunfire, but there is 'still work to be done'
While Bermuda enjoyed a quiet holiday season, with no shootings, Opposition spokesman for National Security Michael Dunkley said there was still much work to be done.No one was shot in Bermuda this December, unlike last year when three men were murdered and another injured by gunfire in December.Police did not report any fatal shootings in December 2010, nor were there reports of anyone being injured from gunfire.Yesterday Mr Dunkley said: “We are pleased to learn that this Christmas and New Year have passed without any major incidents of shooting or murder. We can all remember the horrific numerous shootings of the recent past and a ‘quiet' holiday season in this regard is a very positive change and it sets a nice tone as we start 2011.“We would like to take the opportunity to thank the police and all the support services that worked over the holidays helping to ensure safety and security. While the majority of us enjoyed the time off to celebrate the festive season with family and friends we should never forget those that did work during the holidays.“2011 no doubt will challenge us all as we face a struggling economy, with all its related issues such as unemployment and the continued weakness of our tourism industry, a Government which has burdened the people of Bermuda with ever increasing public debt and the recent increase in violent crime, gangs and shootings over the past few years.“In regards to public safety, while we have enjoyed this past “quiet” holiday season, and the police should be commended for their tireless work, we should be under no illusion that we have solved this problem. There is much work to be done and we look forward to working with all interested parties to tackle the roots of the problem.”
