Hopwood set for college challenge

Former Saltus student Joshua Hopwood will play college golf at North Greenville University in South Carolina this year.

Bermuda’s Joshua Hopwood will play college golf at North Greenville University in South Carolina this year.Hopwood, a former Saltus Grammar School pupil, is set to graduate from Heritage Academy in Hilton Head, South Carolina, and has attended the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy (IJGA) for the past two years.He was ranked number two in the Tarheel Junior Golf Association during last summer and was also last year’s Larry Nelson Cup Champion.Along with many other accolades, Hopwood was also named the 2006 and 2007 Bermuda Player of the Year in the junior boys’ division.Hopwood said: “It’s been an exciting and rewarding experience to be surrounded by junior golfers from 28 countries and 20 states and to be taught by the game’s greatest instructors here at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy.“The Academy has provided a supportive environment whether I’m in the classroom, on the practice range or on the golf course competing. I look forward to applying all that I’ve learned here to the next chapter of my life.”Lead instructor from Hank Haney IJGA, Josh Nahm, said: “Josh has been a student of mine for the last two years and I have watched him grow and mature into a great player and a well-rounded young man.“He is extremely hard working and goal oriented and will be a great addition to the men’s golf programme at North Greenville University.”The Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy was founded in 1995 and is the only junior golf academy in the world to combine training, academics, and competition for serious junior golfers. Students are from over 40 states and 30 countries around the world.
