After blizzard, Bloomberg faces Bermuda questions
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has come under fire after he allegedly spent Christmas weekend in Bermuda as his city was battered by a blizzard.Mr Bloomberg, who owns a home on the Island, has neither confirmed or denied the trip, but told reporters: “I was totally in communications and in charge and accountable all the time.”Mr Bloomberg reportedly attended a Mass late in the evening in Manhattan on December 24, and a press conference at around 4pm on December 26.The New York Times has reported that his private plane was spotted at LF Wade International Airport in between those appearances.Manhattan was struck by blizzard conditions and heavy snow that weekend, causing airports to shut and public transportation to slow to a crawl.Around 600 busses and more than 100 ambulances were stalled during the storm, and hundreds of commuters were left stranded.City officials have since been criticised for not declaring a snow emergency. There have also been accusations of a lack of communication between the city government and the public, and complaints that snow cleanup in some area was delayed by days.Mr Bloomberg, who has previously been criticised by political opponents for his trips to Bermuda, said he is always reachable.“To the best of my recollection, in nine years there’s never been a time when you couldn’t communicate, get me on the phone, whether I’m travelling or uptown or downtown,” he said.A weather emergency was issued for yesterday morning as a winter storm dropped more than nine inches of snow on Central Park and around a foot of snow on the Bronx. The Mayor said city officials had learned from the Christmas storm and had 1,700 plows and 365 salt trucks ready to start the cleanup from yesterday’s storm as soon as possible.
