Record-setter Sinclair storms to easy victory

Kenia Sinclair celebrates winning the Elite Women's Race

Kenia Sinclair set a new record in the women’s elite mile race as she stormed to her third successive triumph last night. The Jamaican was completely untroubled by the rest of the pack, crossing the finish line more than seven seconds ahead of her compatriot and training partner Korene Hinds who came second. Sinclair ran her fastest ever mile last night in 4:33.6 which was almost ten seconds quicker than the time she clocked 12 months ago.Runner-up Hinds finished in 4:46.8 while Panama’s Rolanda Bell came third in a time of 5:04.7.Sinclair set a fast pace from the start and by the halfway mark had left her three competitors trailing in her wake. Although she was slightly disappointed the event had not attracted a stronger field of runners, Sinclair was thrilled to complete a trio of consecutive wins.“It’s my fastest mile ever and obviously I’m really pleased with that,’ she said. “The wind was in my face coming up the hill on the way back but I just tried to keep up with the pace bike. It wasn’t a particularly strong field and I thought it would be stronger, although I knew my training partner Korene (Hinds) would give me a good race.”In the local adult women’s race, Jennifer Alen was the easy winner finishing almost six seconds ahead of Tamika Williams.Alen, who cruised home in 5:23.3, said her impressive performance was a testament to her gruelling training regime.“It feels really good to win this year, I’ve been training very hard. It was basically me running my own race really, I was trying to sit comfortably knowing that Tamika has a good kick so it was a case of keeping a good distance between myself and her so she didn’t catch me at the end.“I was pleased with how it went, but I’d have liked a faster time this evening but it all depends on the day and it wasn’t that day, but it’s a win I’m pleased with.”Alen’s time was 5.23.3 with second place Williams finishing in 5:37.6. Vivienne Lochhead came third in a time of 5:56.7.
