Tablets and e-readers have changed the way many people reads books now a local author has found a way for would-be-authors to get their books published.Entrepreneur McCal Roberts, who published his fictional book, ‘Bonded’, last September through Trafford Publishing, has created what he says is an inexpensive way to produce electronic versions of books, which he wants to share with locals during presentations today and tomorrow.“My book is about a unicorn with special powers,” said Mr Roberts of ‘Bonded’ which has been converted into an e-book in different languages. And the power of social media ... Facebook, Twitter, etc makes it an excellent medium through which to promote a book.“My latest presentation is showing people how to design and develop an electronic book.“I came up with the concept where you can do a book in English, Chinese, Arabic, German and Spanish. You are talking about a day for each one through translation software. But it is best for them to purchase good software rather than get a free one.“You are looking at maybe eight or nine hours for the process. It depends on how many words, mine (‘Bonded’) was 20,000 words and translated into different languages. It took me for each project at least nine hours for each version in Chinese, English and Arabic.”Added the web designer: “I have an encoding system whereby I give out serial numbers if you purchase the book or you can buy online.”Mr Roberts said doing a traditional book through a publisher means having to wait for royalty cheques, whereas e-book sales are made through the author.“This is independent of my publisher and the reason I do it independently is because I get more of my sales back. With the e-book once you make the sale the money goes directly to your account. Once you download it will allow you 20 pages to preview and then will ask you to purchase. After the 20 pages you have to insert a serial code or purchase online.”Mr Roberts is planning to holds presentations at Shine’s House of Music today and tomorrow, prior to returning to the US this weekend, and anyone interested can contact him on 735-4671 or 339-6297.
