Smiles and lunches were served around the island as five university students helped Meals on Wheels as part of their internship programme with a reinsurance firm.

The five women, all interns at Arch Reinsurance, volunteered with the Meals on Wheels food service to help cook, package and deliver around 180 lunches to those unable to cook for themselves.

Skye Robinson, a 19-year-old economics student, said: “For me personally I had never done anything like that, so I guess that’s why I was really excited and why it was really nice to see how everything was prepared and just the whole process of it.”

The interns made specially tailored lunches with staff and volunteers before delivering them directly to the infirm across the island.

Western University student Meagan Stecko said: “The volunteers make you feel like you’re a part of the whole operation.”

Kimika Jackson, 18, added: “I think it’s great that young people got to interact with the older community, because they don’t get that very often and it’s good that we got to show them a little bit of respect that they probably don’t usually get from young people.”

Although community service wasn’t new to some of the students, the interns had “never done anything like that before in terms of community service in Bermuda” according to accounting student Dejanée Hill-Edwards.

She added that she felt that both the staff and clients appreciated their efforts.

“Everybody was enthusiastic, and enjoyed that young people were actually helping them,” Imani Smith added.

“They enjoyed seeing young faces and young smiles and it actually made them a bit happier.”

Allison Garland, the volunteer co-ordinator of Meals on Wheels, said “It was a pleasure having the Arch Summer Interns volunteer at Meals on Wheels.

“They were all very enthusiastic in the kitchen helping to prep and cook the meal that day.

“It is always nice to see young people volunteering their time to a worthy charity and witness first-hand how Meals on Wheels benefits the elderly community.”

ArchRe said that interns volunteering not only gave them a well-rounded experience but helped with team-building.

The students added that they would help at Meals on Wheels again in their own spare time.

Ms Robinson said: “I feel like I want to keep going back to make more of a difference.”
