Nathan Trott moved a step closer to his dream of playing in the Premier League after being named in West Ham United’s first-team squad for the 2017-18 season.

The Bermudian goalkeeper is among the Hammers’s 46-man roster that manager Slaven Bilic will select from over the course of the upcoming campaign.

Trott is West Ham’s third choice goalkeeper behind England international Joe Hart, who is on loan from the club’s Premier League rivals Manchester City, and Spaniard Adrián.

The former BAA and Bermuda Under-17 player has come on in leaps and bounds after signing an initial 2½-year deal with West Ham in January 2016 which has since been extended until 2020.

Trott was part of the England Under-19 squad who won the European Championship in Georgia, by beating Portugal 2-1 in the final last month.

The 18-year-old established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper at under-23 level last term and is now keen to make further inroads in battling Nahki Wells, the Huddersfield Town striker who is out for up to six weeks with an ankle injury, to become the first Bermudian to play in the Premier League since Shaun Goater’s prolific stint at City.

“I am hoping to move towards the first-team squad this season,” Trott told the East London club’s website on the eve of yesterday’s squad announcement.

West Ham are away to Manchester United in their Premier League opener tomorrow with new arrivals Hart, Javier Hernández, Pablo Zabaleta and Marko Arnautovic all in line to make their club debuts.

Mexico forward Hernández scored 59 goals in 158 appearances during a five-year stint at Manchester United between 2010 and 2015 before leaving for German side Bayer Leverkusen.

Meanwhile, Trott kept a clean sheet in West Ham Under-23s Premier League 2 season opener away to division one champions Everton at Chigwell Construction Stadium, in Dagenham, yesterday.

He was called upon in the 84th minute to make a superb diving save which helped the visitors to come away with a point in the goalless draw with Everton.

The home team nearly snatched all three points moments earlier when Jonjoe Kenny, the captain, struck the woodwork.

West Ham were reduced to ten-men when Conor Coventry picked up a second booking and was sent off in the first minute of stoppage time.
