A teen who led police on a high-speed chase on his scooter was this morning fined more than $1,000 and banned from driving for 18 months.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo told Mica Hughes: “You are lucky you didn’t kill yourself or somebody else.”

Hughes, 17, from Sandys, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to failing to stop for police, driving in a dangerous manner and driving without a licence on August 1.

The court heard that police were alerted to five “suspicious” motorcycles at Arnold’s Supermarket in Sandys at about 3.45am.

A police car headed west then spotted the cycles travelling east at high speed and chased them.

All five cycles failed to stop and the officers saw them cutting corners, causing oncoming traffic to swerve, and overtaking other vehicles.

One cycle with a pillion passenger slipped near Scenic Heights Pass in Southampton when the rider lost control.

Both took off on foot and the pillion passenger got away but Hughes was caught.

He told officers that he was angry at the death of a friend and he was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

In court, he said he did not realise the officers were trying to pull him over until he came off the bike, claiming they only had their lights on and not their sirens.

Asked by magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo if he was trying to kill himself, he replied: “No.”

He was fined $150 for driving without a license, $150 for failing to stop for police and $1,000 for driving dangerously.

Hughes was also banned from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
