Two men have been banned for driving offences today.

Thomas Watson, 30, from Devonshire, was riding his cycle along Marsh Folly Road towards the junction with Victoria Street on Friday, July 21, when he was stopped by police.

When police initially asked him whether he had been drinking he replied “no” but when further questioned he said he had a beer or two.

Officers could smell alcohol on his breath and a breathalyser test confirmed that he was over the limit.

Due to the defendant having a previous conviction for impaired driving, magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo stripped Watson of his licence for two years and further fined him $1,500.

Rohan Grant, 48, from Sandys, has been banned from the road for 18 months and fined $1,000 after causing damage to a motor vehicle and writing off his own bike while driving in a dangerous manner.

Grant was on Harbour Road when attempting to overtake a car causing an oncoming vehicle to swerve resulting in a with the defendant. He sustained an injury to his right leg.

He was disqualified from driving all vehicles for 18 months on top of his fine.

Meanwhile, Gladwyn Johnson, 46, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention when his bike collided with the car in front of him.

Johnson was travelling on South Road, Paget, near the pedestrian crossing at White Sands Road, when he rode into the car causing injury to his own face and damage to the back of the car.

Asked whether he had anything to say by Mr Tokunbo, Johnson said: “I took my eye off the road for a minute — it was my fault.”

He was handed an $800 fine and given ten demerit points on his driving licence — the minimal penalty for the offence of driving without due care and attention.
