Lindo’s expands warehouse space and car park

Lindo’s Market in Devonshire is expanding its warehouse space and will also extend the top level customer car park so it is flush to the side of the supermarket building.

The company’s upper floor offices are also being relocated.

All the changes are being made within the current boundaries of the store and its car park.

It is expected the work, which is being done in phases, will take about two years to complete.

The project came about partially out of necessity. Living accommodation, comprising of a house and two studios on the rear top level of the supermarket, was in need of either renovation or redevelopment.

Giorgio Zanol, president of the Lindo’s Group of Companies, said: “First of all, the flooring was wooden in the apartment and after 60 years it could start to rot. Before that happened we wanted to do something.

“We also wanted to revamp our offices and decided to move them at the same time.”

Rather than simply replace the flooring of the living quarters, it was decided to remove them and put in a concrete floor. An upper-level warehouse will be built in their place.

A smaller warehouse on the same level has already been removed to make way for the relocated offices. The adjacent new warehouse area will be larger.

Having a bigger warehouse capacity will allow the store to increase orders of products and add new items. It also means that the warehouse can be better organised, and loading and unloading will be easier.

The final phase of the project will see the upper level of the two-storey car park extended across to join with the main building. This will add about 25 to 30 parking spaces for customers, and provide ground-level shelter from the rain for shoppers using the lower-level parking slots.

It is envisaged an elevator will allow customers on the top level of the car park to access the main entrance of the store below.

Construction of the new offices on the site of a now demolished smaller warehouse is under way. That work is expected to be completed in October.

Explaining the project, Mr Zanol said: “We needed new offices — a better environment.

“We were going to have to replace the wooden flooring of the house and studios after so many years, so we decided to get rid of them and make the warehouse bigger.

“It is going to be worth it in the long run.”

The Devonshire store was named the best grocery store in on the island in this year’s Best of Bermuda Awards.

“We are very proud of that. All the family work together and we have very good employees who work hard — without them we would not have achieved this. The key is everyone pulling in one direction.”

Mr Zanol, who is now 76, continues to work as a hands-on manager, helping throughout the store.

He is known to many for his road running endeavours during the past 40 years, and his fundraising efforts for the Bermuda Diabetes Association, for which he was honoured with an MBE in 2013.

Last year, he broke a vertebrate in his neck after falling while out on a hike. He has recovered, and together with his brother Tullio, 77, completed the Camino de Santiago walk across northern Spain during April and May, taking 28 days to finish the 500-mile trek.
