Advisory: time off work for voting

With the General Election imminent on Tuesday, the Parliamentary Registrar today issued a reminder to employers for eligible staff to be given sufficient time off work to cast their ballots.

The law covers registered voters in accordance with section 36(3) of the Parliamentary Election Act 1978.

According to the Act, “every parliamentary elector whose name appears in the parliamentary register for a constituency in which a contested parliamentary election is held shall, if he is in employment, be entitled to receive from his employer without penalty sufficient time off work on the polling day to enable him to travel to the election room and there record his vote”.
