Man of the match Anderson dedicates winning performance to his mom
DUBAI SPORTS CITY (Bermuda won toss) - Bermuda 242 for seven, beat Hong Kong, 173 all out, by 69 runs.Jason Anderson dedicated his man of the match performance against Hong Kong yesterday to his mother and said she had been the inspiration behind his innings.Anderson scored an unbeaten 106, his first century for Bermuda, in his team's World Cricket League Division Two performance in Dubai, and his stand of 93 with Lionel Cann (50) was vital in propelling Bermuda to a competitive total.Speaking after the game he said: "It feels tremendous to have scored my first century for Bermuda," said Anderson. "This was for my mother, I spoke to her last night, she said score some runs for her."The innings more than made up for Anderson's part in the early loss of David Hemp, who was run out for 36, following a mix-up when Anderson appeared to call for a run and then change his mind.In the end the Bermuda wicketkeeper, who lost 5lbs in weight during his mammoth 137 ball stay at the crease and had to sit out the Hong Kong innings with severe cramp, was the foundation around which the innings was built."Last night after the PNG game everyone was asked to review their roles, and I just kept reviewing my role, over and over and over in my head. I guess that helped me to stay focused," said Anderson."I was just taking it one ball at a time. The guy Scotty (sports pyschologist, Dr David Scott) who has been working with us, he had stressed about looking at it from an every ball perspective and I just tried to go about it that way."Anderson came to the crease in the third over, following Dion Stovell's departure, and he and Hemp set about re-building the Bermuda innings. They put on 52 before Hemp was run out, and the innings stalled slightly thereafter.Chris Foggo (14) came in and put on 31 with Anderson, but it took them ten overs to get the runs, and the lack of urgency in the running between the wickets throughout the innings eventually left Bermuda some 30 or 40 runs short of what they should have scored.Indeed, only the stand between Anderson and Cann, and the 50 runs they put on in the five power play overs that they were together, gave the scoreline an air of respectability. Having reached his 50 with a gentle single, Anderson brought up his 100 in a much more expansive fashion, hitting Asif Khan for a towering six back over his head. After beating Uganda the day before, Hong Kong would have fancied their chances of chasing down Bermuda's total, and Roy Lamsam's well crafted innings of 40 gave them a good start at the top of the order.Bermuda though weren't about to throw another game away, and led by Damali Bell who took two wickets, and Rodney Trott who finished with three for 22 from 7.3 overs, they reduced Hong Kong to 89 for six.At that stage it looked as if Bermuda would win with plenty of overs to spare, however, Hong Kong skipper Najeeb Amar (49) and Ifran Ahmed (21) put on 76 for the seventh wicket, and at 165 for six Hong Kong were still well in the game.Bermuda had gone quiet in the field, and with the batting power play still to come, the game could have gone either way. Then Ahmed skied a Stovell delivery straight down Fiqre Crcokwell's throat, and four balls later, Amar was bowled around his legs trying to sweep. That ended any realistic hopes Hong Kong might have had of snatching another impressive win, and in the end they lost their last four wickets for just eight runs.In the yesteday's other matches, there were convincing wins for both UAE and Namibia against Papua New Guinea and Uganda respectively.Kola Burger put in arguably the days best performances taking five wickets for 25 runs from ten overs as Uganda were skittled out for just 67 as Namibia won by a crushing 205 runs. Earlier skipper Craig Williams had scored 100, and Gerry Snyman 85.UAE meanwhile are the only unbeaten side left in the competition following their 114-run victory over PNG. Shaiman Anwar led the way for UAE, scoring 123 from 118 balls, as the hosts posted 284 in their innings. Arshad Ali then took three wickets for 37 runs as PNG were restricted to 170 for nine from their 50 overs. The teams have a rest day today, before the competition resumes on Monday, when Bermuda will face Uganda, UAE play Hong Kong, and Namibia take on PNG.Scorecard: http://icc-cricket.yahoo.net/match_zone/scorecard.php?type=C&matchId=39001* Don't forget to follow out live commentary: Josh will be covering all the games live.
