Micah Franklin, the Bermuda coach, has hailed the island’s performances at the Junior Caribbean Squash Championships in Guyana.

Despite failing short of medal glory in the singles age-group events, Franklin said Bermuda’s young representatives performed “admirably” against the region’s top young players.

“I’m very proud of the Bermuda team for their performances in the individual event,” said Franklin, who is ranked 162nd on the Professional Squash Association World Tour.

“Considering we have a very young team, as well as four first-timers, they fought admirably and gave one hundred per cent, which is all I can ask for.

“I’m hopeful that in three or four years we can have a very strong team considering the youthfulness of our players.”

Three of the island’s nine-member squad reached the semi-finals in their age groups.

Charlie Riker lost 11-1, 11-7, 11-4, 11-6, 11-3 in his under-15 boys semi-final against Trinidad’s Christopher Anthony, while Taylor Carrick went down 11-9, 11-1, 11-1 against Khamal Cumberbatch, of the United States, in the under-17 boys semis.

Hailey Moss, who is among four players representing Bermuda for the first time, lost to Guyana’s Paige Fernandes 11-5, 11-3, 11-6 in the under-13 girls semi-final. Matthew Elliott and Anaya Smith both bowed at the quarters.

Elliott lost against team-mate Riker 11-3, 11-4, 11-4, while Smith went down 11-5, 11-8, 11-2 against Guyana’s Daniel Islam in the under-17 boys.

Bermuda will face host nation and defending champions Guyana in the team competition.

The last time Bermuda won silverware at the championships was in 2012 in Jamaica, when Dylan Pratt and Noah Browne won the boys age-group honours to help the island capture the boys team title.
