Former top cricketer Robert Gaglio has died at the age of 62.

During his heyday, Gaglio was a prominent batsman for BAA before moving on to National Sports Club where he was to establish himself as one of the outstanding openers in the Island.

Gaglio was not known for his forceful strokeplay, but he was a player who still caused cricket fans to marvel at his variety of strokes and ability to fend off aggressive bowling.

He forged an excellent opening partnership at the Nationals with Ronnie Madeiros.

Although he developed his game at BAA, Gaglio came into his own at the crease when he moved to Nationals, where he was to join formidable cricketers such Clarence Parfitt, Rupert Scotland, Barry DeCouto, Barry Sousa, Shiraz Ali, Ed (Tinty) Ming, Douglas (Blip) Morris and Fred (Dickty) Trott.

He was also a fine slip fielder and often surprised many with his agility for such a well-built man.

Gaglio was the father-in-law of former Bermuda and St. George's Cup Match all-rounder Arnold Manders.

Legendary former cricketer Sheridan Raynor recalled Gaglio's ability as a player and his overall contribution to the sport for nearly two decades.

"He was very much a good batsman, opener and early order and one I would classified as an allrounder as well because he did a great deal of spin bowling.

"He gave many years both to BAA and Nationals, playing for Nationals at a time when they developed into one of the strongest teams in the Island," said the ex-Bermuda international, Somerset Cup Match and Southampton Rangers' stalwart.
