Police this afternoon confirmed the death of an inmate at Westgate Correctional Facility.

According to a spokesman, at around 11.30pm yesterday emergency services were dispatched to the facility after a male inmate was found in an unresponsive state.

“Despite life-saving efforts by a Corrections officer, the 59-year-old man was later pronounced dead,” the spokesman said.

“A police-led investigation is currently under way regarding the circumstances. Until his next of kin have been notified no further information regarding the deceased will be provided at this time.”
