St David’s and Trojans share the spoils

St. David’s 3 Somerset Trojans 3A OJ Minors second half equaliser enabled St David’s to take a deserved point from their Premier Division match against the Trojans at Lord’s yesterday. The visitors only have themselves to blame for the slip, having taken an early 2-0 lead after just seven minutes and then failed miserably to find any sort of sparkle for the remainder of the contest when they simply gave a jaded performance.Dion Stovell gave his side the lead after five minutes when he smartly headed home a Jemeiko Harvey-Outerbridge cross and two minutes later one feared a walkover when Jonathan Bean latched onto a cross from Jelani Scott, chested it down and drove the ball into the back of the net from close range. But St David’s buckled down after this wave of pressure and responded superbly. They were gratetful to the West Enders for being allowed to climb back into the contest after a long period of scrappy midfield play the home side began to show signs of taking the initiative.Anthony Burchall was prominent down the left flank providing some defence-splitting crosses from his left-back position and from one such move after 27 minutes Shaquille Bean in the Trojans’ goal had to dive full-length to push the ball outside for a corner.Wayward passing as they entered the penalty area started to frustrate both teams but the home side, with Dimitri Butterfield and Dominique Lambert involved in most of the advances, kept the Trojans’ pinned down more than ever. The deserved opener for St David’s came after 34 minutes when Lambert made a beautiful scissor kick on the turn with the ball darting into the goal from 14 yards. With the visitors continuing to find it tough producing any sort of rhythm, especially with midfield schemer Jelani Butterfiield injured and substituted at the interval, it wasn’t a surprise when St David’s took advantage of their ineffective opponents and grabbed the equaliser after 53 minutes when Aaron Crockwell received a cross from Fiqre Crockwell and masterfully chipped over the advancing Bean in the Trojans’ goal to make it 2-2.St David’s followed this up with Minors and Butterfield putting long-range shots just over the bar. However, Trojans salvaged some hope when they took a surprise 3-2 lead after 69 minutes when Jahi Simmons crossed into the middle for Stovell to tap home from a few yards to make it 3-2.But with the goal failing to give the Trojans any real momentum to take the upperhand, St David’s roared back with the deserved equaliser after 73 minutes when Minors coolly and smartly headed home long throw in down the left flank by Aaron Crockwell.Ten minutes later Crockwell missed what should have been the winner when he hammered a ball just wide from 14 yards after taking a cross from the lefty by Minors.St David’s: C Richardson, A Cannonier, A Lugo, T Govia, A Burchall (Z Morris, 80), K Bean, F Crockwell, D Butterfield, F Crockwell, A Crockwell, O MinorsSubstitutes not used: E Robinson, D Paynter, C Wellman.Somerset Trojans: S Bean, J Rogers, D Minors (G Smith, 66), T Ming, K Simmons, A Trott, J Harvey-Outerbridge (M Jones, 66), J Scott (J Butterfield, 45), J.Bean, D Stovell, J SimmonsSubstitutes not used: R Simons, D Simmons, L Burgess, T Harvey.Yellow cards: J Rogers.Man of the match: D Lambert (St David’s)Referee: M.Wyer
