The Sassy Saxes, a recently formed group of young female saxophone players, are preparing to visit Denmark to experience Copenhagen’s music and cultural environment firsthand. This exciting saxophone quartet of 13 and 14-year olds comprises Tashae Trott (alto), Eva Frazzoni (alto), Mira Hartwig (tenor) and Shona Maule (baritone). Led by Lisa Maule, head of Performing Arts at Saltus Grammar School, the talented ensemble began playing wind instruments in the Upper Primary school at Saltus. Having gained experience through the Wind Band and Concert Band they now play together in the saxophone section of the Saltus Jazz Band.On December 13, the Sassy Saxes will travel to Copenhagen, for their first overseas educational and performance trip.During the six days, the group will be afforded an opportunity to experience the Danish capital’s music and cultural environment first hand. The varied programme includes a tour of the Royal Danish Academy of Music, The Radio Concert Hall and the Conservatory of Rhythmic Music. The group will gain insight into studying in the UK and Europe and the opportunities offered to EU students. The quartet will also visit both Tivoli Gardens, famous for its jazz entertainment, and Montmartre, the legendary Copenhagen jazz club, which in the 60s and 70s was ‘home’ to Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Stan Getz and Kenny Drew. One of the objectives of this trip is also to network and introduce the quartet to other students and musicians. In addition to a few local Danish schools, the girls will visit Rygaards International School and plan to give performances at those schools. The students will also tour historic Copenhagen, which dates back to 1167.The four girls have been working diligently to develop a repertoire since the start of the school year and look forward to showcasing their talents in Denmark. Mrs Maule explains: “The trip to Copenhagen will extend their musical experience and broaden their horizons. The girls will work with world class musicians and have the opportunity to perform their own music as well which will greatly benefit the girls in their development as music students."lThe Sassy Saxes are available over the Christmas period for background music, holiday parties and small receptions.
