A 24-year-old man who made a run for it when police stopped him for speeding has been given an absolute discharge.

Henry Stevens-Carty, of Devonshire, spent the night in custody after being arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Magistrates’ Court heard that Stevens-Carty was clocked riding his bike at 67km/h on South Road near the junction with Brighton Hill at 1.30am.

He was stopped and informed that he also had an outstanding warrant. Stevens-Carty began to back away from the officers, saying he didn’t have any warrants.

After being told he would be committing an offence if he did not comply with the officers, Stevens-Carty turned and ran.

Officers pursued him on foot and he jumped into the bushes near Devonshire Bay, where he was eventually found.

In court today, he pleaded guilty to escaping lawful custody, speeding at 67km/h and another two speeding tickets from January this year and October last year.

He also apologised, telling the court that he was confused about the process.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Stevens-Carty $300 and handed him five demerit points for each of the speeding offences.

However, noting that he had spent a night in custody, he granted him an absolute discharge for escaping custody.
