Dear Sir,

I read with some concern your article in The Royal Gazette of April 22, entitled “New salvo at Lahey Clinic alleges ‘pact’ with Brown”. The Lahey Clinic claims that it was the first to bring highly trained specialists to Bermuda. This is blatantly untrue.

John Stubbs, and other medical doctors, brought several specialists to Bermuda in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. To name those I remember, they were Sidney Watkins (neurosurgery), Bill Wilson (orthopaedic surgeon), Richard Turner Warwick (urology), Robert Midgley (plastic and reconstructive surgery), William Gerstein (dermatology).

These eminent physicians came to Bermuda on a regular basis and I’m sure there were others. It should be noted that Dr Stubbs received no monetary reward for this service to Bermudians.

His secretary during these 30 years dealt with work permits, malpractice insurance, travel arrangements and operating theatre time. I would like the record to be set straight on this point and have this specious claim refuted.
