Jewellery designer Alexandra Mosher is to open a combined gallery and studio on Hamilton’s Front Street.

The new premises — more than three times the size of her existing outlet in Washington Mall — will be based in the former Otto Wurz store near the Ferry Terminal.

Ms Mosher explained that her handcrafted jewellery was made in Park Street, Hamilton, but sold in Washington Mall.

She said: “We can now do that all in one space — we’re now moving our entire studio into the Front Street space and we will be able to do studio tours as well.”

Ms Mosher said her company, which produces unique pieces with a dash of Bermuda style, had already been selected by the Bermuda Tourism Authority to be part of a high-end retail tour scheme for visitors.

She added: “The great thing about Front Street is I can show the designs then take people into the studio and show them how its made.”

And she said she would also be expanding her collection, best known for its pieces featuring island pink sand, with a larger range of fine jewellery using gold, diamonds and other gemstones.

Ms Mosher said: “We’ve been looking for more than a year for the right place. There are so few buildings that are the right location for the foot traffic.

“I didn’t realise how close this was to the Ferry Terminal and I think that’s why that end of Front Street has changed so much.

“You can see the new store and studio from the terminal and we will have pink awnings — it will definitely be a landmark.”

Ms Mosher added the new premises also had wraparound windows with plenty of glass to allow for window display of her work and light to flood in.

She said: “Having this many windows is really exciting for us and a chance to be able to do things that inspire people to come into the shop.”

Ms Mosher launched her jewellery business in 2004 as a part-time venture, selling her work at Harbour Nights and on Saturday mornings in Rock Island coffee shop on Reid Street, Hamilton, while continuing to work in events and marketing in the hospitality industry.

But the business took off and she made it a full-time business in 2010 and taking over the Washington Mall store four years ago.

Ms Mosher said: “The mall is wonderful and we will not be leaving the mall, but the new space is a wonderful opportunity.”

The new store and studio is expected to open next week.

Ms Mosher said: “We’re thrilled to be opening our doors in time for the much anticipated America’s Cup festivities.”

The interior of the store has been completely revamped, with a mosaic tile threshold designed to look like “undulating tide pools of pink sandy swirls”.

Centrepiece tables are made up of “organically formed circles” created to represent a cluster of boiler reefs, while a wing-shaped bar, inspired by one of Ms Mosher’s favourite pendant designs, will have tiny fibre optic lights “scattered like diamonds set into the flowing concrete surface”.

Ms Mosher said: “I’ve poured my soul into this space and I very much hope to inspire all who enter.”
