A veteran of the cyle business
of the Leslie W. Wilson Cycle Shop.
After all, Mr. Wilson has devoted virtually his whole life to the cycle business. Prior to forming the Leslie W. Wilson Cycle Shop in January, 1960, he worked with cycles for many years.
"I started out at the Robinson's bicycle store on Court Street,'' said Mr.
Wilson. "I had an after school job there which I quite enjoyed.
And when Mr. Wilson left school, he decided to make a career out of the cycle business.
"I worked at Burnaby Cycles for over twenty years. But then I decided to do something for myself,'' he said.
He opened a cycle shop and since then, he's never looked back. Mr. Wilson's wife Mabel, the company's vice president, came to work for him and they had five children who also helped out with the business after school and on weekends.
"Today two of the kids are still heavily involved,'' said Mr. Wilson. Both Leslie Wilson Jr. and Wendy Wilson work in the shop full time. And two of the Wilson's grandchildren work there in the summer.
The store, which sells bicycles, motor cycles and accessories as well as service, was first opened on St. John's Road and is presently located on Union Street.
"We try and keep up with all the new technology,'' said Mr. Wilson. "For instance a big change in bicycles is the introduction of the mountain bike.
"But our main line of sales is accessories which include tyres, tubes chrome plated spokes, alloyed rims, cables, helmets, gloves and so forth. We carry all the everyday bits and pieces for bikes,'' he said.
"When my wife and I retire, we hope our children will take over. And they'll look after our interest.'' Said Ms Wendy Wilson: "But my brother and I will take over and enjoy those new challenges that every day offers.''
