More floor space allows greater ideas
that floor space has been increased by more than 3,000 square feet.
He has plans for a full sandwich and salad deli, bakery and rotisserie. And a catering service is also a possibility.
The deli would cater to area residents and the many people in Bermuda who "live behind the driving wheel''.
Harrington Hundreds had a liquor licence before the expansion, Mr. Aguiar said.
But that section has been greatly enlarged and now includes an attractive wine cellar.
Each of the more than 325 bottles of wine has been personally selected by Mr.
Aguiar and his wine consultant Mr. Kevin Green of Hand Arnold. And each bottle is wiped and dusted regularly by Harrington Hundreds staff.
"I don't know of any other supermarket that can rival our wine section,'' he said.
It was decided to expand the wine section because of the popularity of the light alcoholic beverage today.
"Wine is extremely popular -- it's where the growth is,'' he said. "People are more interested in wines than spirits. They're like fashions, always changing. And now there are reports its good for you.'' The wine section was not the only one that was vastly expanded, he noted.
Harrington Hundreds is the only supermarket in Bermuda that focuses heavily on natural foods and wheat-free, fat-free and salt-free products, Mr. Aguiar claims.
There are chemical and preservative-free foods in every department, he pointed out, including potato chips, pet food, mustards, mayos and ketchups, juices, jams, pastas, and cereals.
"A large segment of the population has health concerns -- they can't eat certain foods,'' Mr. Aguiar said. "And a number of people have heart problems.'' People came from as far as Somerset to buy Harrington Hundreds' natural foods, especially the baby foods.
"We can't keep them on the shelf,'' he said.
A number of athletes and people with food allergies come from far as well to buy Harrington Hundreds' soy and rice drinks, he added. And the corn and rice pastas are popular with those who are allergic to wheat.
Mr. Aguiar started developing his natural foods stock a few years ago when he noticed them filling shelves in US supermarkets.
"Being in the business I always try and visit supermarkets when I'm overseas,'' he said. "There are a couple of health food stores here with similar products. My plan was to mainstream the products. You can buy your health food products and regular products at the same time.'' In the household goods section there are plenty of environmentally friendly alternative products to choose from -- toilet tissue, natural toothpaste, mouthwash, cleaners.
But he says: "People can buy what they are used to or the healthier, more environmentally friendly products. I don't mash it down peoples' mouths''.
Even Harrington Hundreds' heating and cooling system helps in the effort to save the earth, making use of the latest technology by using warm air already in the room to heat water.
At Harrington Hundreds, you are guaranteed the freshest meats and poultry, that are hormone and antibiotic-free.
Harrington Hundreds has a licence to sell top quality Black Angus beef, the finest red beef in the world.
It also has the popular boneless and skinless chicken breasts, a large selection of pates, Bermuda and imported fish, and a variety of other meats.
Shoppers will find that each aisle features something a little different, for example: unusual teas (PMS, Pregnancy), gourmet mushrooms, a full compliment of Chinese food products, purple broccoli, black bean taco chips -- the list goes on.
Prices are not much different from other food stores, though Mr. Aguiar notes, "You pay for what you get''.
