The sources for sports goods

father owns across from the PHC stadium in Warwick. He wanted to specialise in soccer items like boots and shin pads.

But the ex-BAA goalkeeper, who now plays for Port Royal in the second division, has broadened his sights to adapt to changes in his customers' tastes.

"When I opened up just before Christmas I had intended to sell just soccer stuff like boots and shirts,'' Mr. Hayward explains.

"Now I'm trying to get into the fashion end of things because I see a lot of the younger people are really into the flashy designer t-shirts, sports wear and shoes.

"I always had a dream to open my own shop but the hardest thing was getting the recognised brand names like Nike and Addidas,'' he says.

Mr. Hayward did not give up and soon convinced his suppliers that his shop's out-of-town location could be an asset.

"Being out of Hamilton was a definite advantage for getting these major suppliers to allow me to carry their labels. They saw my being new to the business and my location as an asset.

However, being situated in Warwick poses other advantages too.

"We open until eight in the evenings and until nine on Fridays and Saturdays and this helps us catch the younger crowd who are our biggest buyers of soccer gear.

"Five or ten years from now, based on trends I'm seeing, we will try to target the casual or recreation runner and maybe golf and tennis enthusiasts because we want to reach a broader section of the sporting world.'' SPORTS SOURCE -- If you happen to be passing through Warwick, stop in and see Paul and Lisa Hayward at the Sports Source.
