Clarendon's new home holds future hope
Bermuda is looking for ways to reduce its carbon footprint, engineers and designers are making use of the latest and greatest energy efficient technologies and incorporating them into their buildings.
President and CEO of Phoenix Stores Ltd. George Grundmuller talked with The Royal Gazette about some of the energy efficient designs in the new Clarendon Pharmacy.
"One of the things that appealed to us about the new location on Victoria Street was the concept of a green, environment friendly, building.
"That goes along very much with what Phoenix believes in terms of health, cleaner living and taking care of one's self and each other.
"It's a very positive statement the new Victoria Place building makes. Everything is environmently friendly with the materials such as paint and everything used in its construction.
"It's all been tested and there are very strict rules with what kind of materials and paints can be used when building a green building. With their energy consumption everything was laid out so that as little energy as possible would be used. It's state of the art with energy efficient air conditioning systems.
"There is also a green cleaning contract meaning all the chemicals used for cleaning are tested and certified environment friendly. It is also the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building in Bermuda. The building breaks ground in a lot of ways."
