An ideal way to spend the day

It can be difficult to know what dad's really want for Father's Day. They are not always forthcoming with their true feelings and very often moms, being naturally better gift buyers, purchase or arrange what they would enjoy for dad.

There's no sinister intention here just the Mars versus Venus contradiction at work.

So to try and clear up any cosmic misunderstanding between the sexes The Royal Gazette polled a few dads, with a promise of anonymity, to find out how they'd like to spend this year's Daddy's Day.

Interestingly most chose to include their wives and children in at least some part of the day. This is interesting because in a similar poll of mothers asking about their ideal Mother's Day at least half described said "give me the day off."

The reasons for this are probably varied but there is at least a small chance that most fathers polled either doubted their anonymity or figured they'd better play it safe just in case.

Or maybe dads just love being with their families. Who knows? And further speculation will probably just rile both mom and dad so on to the results of the poll.

One Dad said let me go have some fun and then its family time: "A good foursome on the golf course to start, followed by some quality time with my boys and a quiet dinner later, without the kids!"

Along the same lines but with the day in reverse a second Dad said: "Breakfast with my family and the rest of the day to do whatever I feel like doing. Then after putting the children to bed, dinner and a movie; in or out, it doesn't matter as long as I don't have to cook or do dishes."

Apparently being pampered is apparently OK for this Dad whose ideal day goes like this: "Breakfast in bed, or at least a good Skype call from my overseas daughter, and an intimate evening with my significant other."

While Dad number four says the more family the better: "Just a day with the family — nice coffee and breakfast with my wife and son. Then having the rest of the family over for a BBQ with adult drinks!

"And spending a few hours chatting with my Dad and my Father-in-law. Then having some quality time with the wife... This would be a great day!"

Finally there was one guy who fessed up to wanting a 'man's day out': "A day out fishing with a cooler full of beer and a driver to take me home works just fine," he said. "I love my family but I don't get to fish much any more."

So there we have it, the survey says most dad's want to spend time with their families on Father's Day. Which is a fantastic reflection of modern dad's. The thing is, if Dad number five was to call the other four quoted in this story and say: "Let's go fishing on June 21st," it's almost certain they'd jump at the chance (as long as they can spend a little time with the kids and the wife says it's OK).
