XL Insurance (Bermuda) Ltd

"I really enjoy meeting dynamic people with knowledge and expertise."

With her associate in business administration in hand, Bermuda College graduate, Sandy Gaglio, joined XL Insurance Ltd. seven years ago as an administrative assistant in the IT department. She's been climbing the ladder of success ever since.

In April this year she was promoted to associate underwriter which is the position she currently holds.

"As many underwriters say, the knowledge for the position I currently hold comes with time and experience. You learn something new everyday."

In line with this belief, Ms Gaglio also took insurance classes at the Bermuda Insurance Institute.

On a daily basis she gathers, reviews and analyses risk information and programme specifications provided by the broker and insured.

"I also review RMS (Risk Modeling) results to determine an accounts natural catastrophic exposures (Earth Movement, Windstorm and Flood); input information into a pricing tool which assists in providing the pricing range of an account and evaluate an insured's reported values by: comparing to the prior years values, comparing the price per square footage and selecting the accounts occupancy.

"I enjoy learning about the insurance business. Also, being in the underwriting field entails broker/client meetings and I really enjoy meeting dynamic people with knowledge and expertise regarding the large corporations that XL insures."

Ms Gaglio says communication is key: "In this field it is important to build great relationships with brokers — ultimately they are a key element in providing business to our company. Just because you start off in a position that may not develop into a career — remember that in a bigger company there is always room to grow as I did at XL. I was first able to provide service on the administrative side (IT Department), and then I paid out expenses/claims in Treasury. Now I am contributing to XL's core function — underwriting."
