May 2009 Deaths

Tributes poured in for pastor and former politician Reverend Dr. Wilbur (Larry) Lowe, who died suddenly on May 6 aged 62. A respected pastor at Mount Zion AME Church, Rev. Lowe was also known as the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) MP for St. George's South from 1998 to 2003.

The Right Reverend Vernon Randolph Byrd died on May 5 at age 77. Bishop Byrd, was well-known for his ability to make peace during times of adversity. He was the 105th elected and consecrated bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

He was called to be a minister at age of 12, he moved through the hierarchy of the church, serving congregations across the United States. He moved to Bermuda and St. Paul AME Church in the 1960s.

The Premier led the tributes for Sir Richard Posnett, a former Governor of Bermuda who died this month aged 89. The Premier said Bermuda was "a small piece of his prestigious 30 year plus diplomatic career with Her Majesty's Government which took him from Africa, Central America, the Caribbean and Bermuda, often during politically turbulent times."
