SEPTEMBER BY THE NUMBERS

$635,121: The cost to the taxpayer of a legal challenge launched by Government in protest of a satellite network notice on behalf of the Isle of Man – which ultimately failed, as revealwed to the House of Assemblt by Telecommunications Minister Terry Lister.

1,366: The number of students enrolled at Bermuda Colleg in September, a rise of 25 percent, compared to the same time last year. There are now 1,366 students, compared with 1,092 last year; 1,006 are part-time and 360 are full-time. About 66 percent of students – or slightly more than 900 – are taking advantage of the free tuition, provided for the first time this year for Bermudians by Government at a cost to it of almost $730,000.

$15 million: The amount of money Butterfield Bank pledged to pump into financing the commercial and residential projects in the Economic Empowerment Zone in North East Hamilton. The money will be handed out to qualifying businesses and residents of the EEZ via preferential rates and terms for small business, commercial, home equity and historic home loans.

$260,000: Fines paid since a new vehicle licence electronic monitoring system was introduced onto Bermuda’s roads – including one owner who racked up $63,000 in citations. The Electronic Vehicle Registration system (EVR) went live in July to track unlicenced and uninsured vehicles. Some fines were later reduced on appeal.
