All Bermuda school children, from Primary through Secondary, are required to wear school uniforms. According to various sources, including the Ministry of Education, the benefits of the uniform standard include:

1. Reduced peer pressure and competition

2. Increased school pride

3. Increased focus on learning

4. Decreased discipline problems

5. The creation of a work-like atmosphere

6. Fewer distractions

7. Less expense for parents

Uniform standards are strict. It is not uncommon for students to receive demerits or be sent home from school for infractions of the dress code. However requirements are made clear to both parents and students prior to the start of each school year.

As an example, Bermuda High School For Girls posted the following Dress Guidelines for Years seven to 12 on their website for the 2005/2006 school year.

Uniform Regulations

1. All clothing must be clearly named.

2. Skirt, Trousers or Walking Shorts: navy blue - available only from The English Sports Shop.

3. Shirt: Year 7-11: White short or long sleeve blouse, traditional in style with pointed collar. Rolled sleeves are not acceptable; Year 12: Blue shirts, short or long sleeved.

4. Tie: Available from School Shop or Office.

5. Sweater: Navy blue (long sleeve) cardigan with school crest available through the School Shop; a sleeveless sweater vest is also available

6. Blazer: Optional

7. Raincoat or All Weather Jacket: Navy blue, white or yellow

8. Shoes: sensible dark brown or black leather shoes (no fashion shoes allowed) with maximum heel height of 2.5 inches

9. Socks: Navy blue or white ankle socks OR navy blue knee socks

10. Gym Uniform: All available at School Shop - T-shirt with crest in house colour, white T-shirt with crest available for team players, navy blue school shorts, black exercise shorts (optional)
