Greenrock need you to make Healthy Harvest a success
On April 20 just two days before Earth Day Greenrock announced the Phase II plans for its Healthy Harvest project, initially launched in 2009 as a movement to raise awareness about Bermuda’s local food production and consumption. Our message to local media and the community: Greenrock has started identifying plots for building community gardens and orchards across the Island and we need help to make Healthy Harvest a success.Financially, we need funds to support the Phase II plans over the next five years. We are seeking potential corporate and individual patrons who can elect to participate at different sponsorship levels. We are grateful to Catlin, our lead sponsor, who believes in our vision, planning and mission of Healthy Harvest that is, having Bermuda residents from all walks of life benefit from the growing and consumption of local fruits and vegetables. We also need help and in-kind donations from the wider community, such as:· Donations of top-soil from existing or future construction projects· Donations of trucking and small construction equipment to help in building gardens and orchards· Donations of gardening equipment (i.e. shovels, planning trowels, rakes)· Donations of vegetable plants and fruit trees· Donating use of existing orchards or gardens· Identifying potential plots for community orchards and gardens on private or public land send pictures and details to info[AT]greenrock.orgGreenrock is receiving support and input for the Phase II plans from a Healthy Harvest Advisory Panel, comprised of individuals who offer different perspectives, experience and varying degrees of knowledge to assist us in creating a successful and equally sustainable project.Today, we are progressing with the plot development plan for Healthy Harvest with the aim to secure our initial plots in East, Central and West zones. Following that, we will be closely assessing each plot’s needs and begin work on building and maintaining them in time for the Fall growing season.Over time, we expect to build volunteer bases for Healthy Harvest to help minimise the cost of building, maintaining and harvesting our gardens and orchards. We envision having volunteers from companies, various church groups, schools and other organisations wanting to make a difference in how future generations learn about and experience healthy eating.
