Are we obsessed with looking our best? I cannot answer the question and I do not know anyone here that knows for sure, but there is a confidence that you can get with feeling that you look good, especially if this is important to you.

Plastic surgeon Christopher Johnson knows this from experience. He's opened a medical spa believed to be the first of its kind on the Island.

Aura Medical Spa offers all the plastic surgery options one might expect and also features spa therapy treatments.

“We have the traditional plastic surgery services such as tummy tucks, breast augmentation and liposuction but also the non-invasive spa-type treatments that make you look and feel younger but don't have as much down time to them,” he said.

Treatments like Botox, Restylane and lunch-time face lifts a procedure where small threads are used to pull up sagging facial skin and tighten the neck are on the menu of offerings. So is something called SmartLipo.

According to Dr Johnson this non-invasive form of liposuction is for small areas of fat people want to get rid of. It's done with low-energy, high-intensity ultrasound waves. As with other ultrasound treatments, a conductor is moved across the surface of the skin. There are no needles or puncturing of the skin in any way.

“SmartLipo is used to get rid of pockets of fat so it works on your neck, it works on your jowls and your love handles, “ he explained.

“It excites the fat cells to extrude fat from them. Then we massage and give you medicine and your body takes the fat away. No needles, no down time you come in, you go back to work. There's really no bruising. There is a little bit of swelling. It's really state-of-the-art.”

The procedure is not for high-volume weight loss, he warned.

“If you want to take off a lot you still need to go to sleep,” he said. “We put a little hole and suck the fat out.”

He said SmartLipo is appropriate for those who see a pocket of fat they'd like to shed, maybe because they are going to a wedding or a party.

“In these cases it's very, very simple,” he said.

Another option for Aura clients who want to shed weight is adherence to a low-calorie diet, and tablets or injection of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG).

HCG is a hormone the body naturally produces in pregnancy. Research has shown that when taken in very low doses, people quickly shed pounds as they have less appetite.

According to Dr Johnson, it's common for people to lose five to ten pounds a week on the programme. At Aura he oversees clients on the diet and said in some cases he adds a pharmaceutical fat burner.

The spa also offers laser hair removal and a host of beauty treatments you find in salons or spas.

“We have a massage therapist on site now that will provide all the treatments including aromatherapy, Swedish, shiatsu and hot stones massage,” he said. “Body wraps, whatever you name we have it pedicure, manicure we will be the one-stop place.

“You can get your make-up done, Botox, nails and boom! Out the door. Come in the front door and go out the back looking really beautiful.”
