What is reflexology?

Stimulation of specific areas in the foot can bring about healing in other areas of the body. This is the claim of reflexology, an ancient Eastern healing technique that has become popular and continues to gain acceptance in the West.It works on the theory that nerve endings in the feet correlate specifically with body organs and tissues and that by stimulating a specific area you also cause the corresponding organ to be stimulated.Reflexologists hold that a host of conditions from migraines to a weak bladder can be controlled in this way. The practise is more than a simple way in which to feel good, according to local practitioner Hayley Bennett. You may actually feel discomfort when a trained practitioner works to break-up and dislodge crystals. And breaking up those crystals is the real treatment aspect of reflexology. The deposits settle on the reflex points in the body and disrupt blood flow. According to reflexology theory, this disruption of blood flow can lead to congestion in various organs and tissues, as cells don’t get optimal levels of oxygen. You feel this often as stress.Stimulating the pressure points can thus release stress.Ms Bennett said reflexology is also a very good way of getting rid of toxins in the body through lymphatic drainage. The lymph system works alongside the blood circulatory system in the body, filtering out toxins. It is the body’s natural way of preventing and fighting infection. In special reflexology techniques Ms Bennett said she is able to stimulate the lymph system so that it works more efficiently. This means toxins are removed from vital organ and tissue cells faster and can be excreted. After such treatments clients are encouraged to drink lots of water to aid in flushing the toxins out.
