Bev gets in the swing for her big birthday bash . . .
“Live at Sixty-five” was the chant that resonated among some 300 guests at the big bash in the social centre at CedarBridge Academy celebrating the 65th birthday of Mrs. Beverley Griffin. And Bev, as she is popularly known, played her part well. After the rousing singing of Happy Birthday to this lovely, short-in-stature Pembroke mother of two, she was given a friendly reminder by her friends that although she’s entitled to a free ride in public transportation and discounts otherwise, she should be sure to carry her ‘ID’ in order to get the advantages, as some may not be inclined to believe she has in fact reached that milestone.Bev is a trained dental nurse, and manager of the Paget dental office of Dr David Roblin. She let it be known to her guests that the theme of the celebration and dress code was a trip “back-in-the-days” of the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s. That was an era she remembered as one of peace and love; the Chubby Checker and James Brown days; the days of the big Afro.Unlike her current hairstyle, Bev then had a natural Afro, almost as big as herself. She made a grand entrance at the party in her ‘Afro Pops’. The big feature of the party following the serving of all one could eat and drink, was ‘Show time’. Master of Ceremonies Elvin Harvey and David Dewitt Thomas on music kept the show truly lively bringing the actor-guests into the spotlight.Bev’s boss, Dr Roblin, was disguised as a hippie; fireman Kevin Darrell in his red suit and dark glasses reminded one of entertainer Rick James back-in-the-day.There were Chubby Checker and the Chubbettes as well as Elvis impersonators. Lloyd Evans as a John Travolta. Insurance executive Neville Tyrrell did a fantastic act as James Brown. And Bev herself backed up by her cousin Judith Hall Bean, who normally is a conservative Cabinet Secretary, and friend Donna got a standing ovation as the swinging, singing Bevelettes.Overall it was a great party. Beverley said she’s now being bombarded by friends who unabashedly ask her when the next big one is coming up.
