Thelma celebrates her 90th in style
The characteristically charming personality of Mrs Thelma Fox of Wellington, St George’s was accentuated over and over on September 6 when she celebrated her 90th birthday.Surrounded by 74 family members and friends, Mrs Fox was feted in style at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club in Paget. It was an evening highlighted by fine dining, splendid entertainment and an abundance of heart-felt tributes honouring the nonagenarian affectionately called the “birthday girl”.As guests arrived, they were greeted by Mrs Fox’s three daughters, Marlene Warren, Sharon Welch and Hazel Perkins, organisers of the event. Birthday messages and well wishes were scripted on a large poster board with a glamorous photo of Mrs Fox adorning the centre.Decorated in purple and silver, the RHADC dining room looked more inviting than ever offering its magnificent view of the harbour and the City of Hamilton.Mrs Fox’s son-in-law, Cranston Warren Sr, opened the evening’s activities with a prayer of thanksgiving. Soft dinner music and nostalgic Oldie Goldie songs were rendered by Michael Perinchief on the keyboard, Jade Minors on the saxophone and songstress June Caisey. Following the buffet dinner, cousin-in-law Joe McCann, with his rich baritone voice, sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Find Us Faithful”. Mrs Fox’s grand-daughter, Dr Tammy Trott, played a spirited flute solo of “You Raise Me Up”.The festivities were interrupted by daughter, Sharon, wanting to make important announcement. She had just received word that her daughter-in-law Judith, wife of Jamie, had given birth to a baby girl, named Jada. It was a very special birthday gift for Mrs Fox who beamed with pleasure at the news that a great grand-daughter had been born on her 90th birthday!Of course, this meant that Jamie and Judith missed the birthday celebration; however, they had prepared a DVD presentation for the occasion highlighting Thelma, her late husband, Royden, who for many years piloted US Navy and Air Force boats stationed at the base, and their family down through the years. The pictures, accompanied by background musical selections, proved to be the “icing on the cake” of a superb evening. With the birthday song sung and candles blown out, Mrs Fox was hailed with tribute after tribute, revealing the amazing number of lives she has touched by her thoughtfulness, friendliness and kind deeds.Mrs Fox sustains an active life with an excellent spirit. She’s a member of three seniors clubs and regards as one of her pastimes selling tags for a variety of charitable organizations.Among those present were Kenneth and Valma Richardson who reside in England. They are friends of Marlene and Cranston, who had gotten to know Mrs Fox and love her. The latter had called them in January inviting them to her “party” giving them ample time to make travel arrangements!More drama was yet to come as grandson, Cranston Jr, rose to pay a tribute on behalf of himself and the other grand-children, Jamie and Jevon Welch, Dr Tammy Trott, Kristy Warren and Reneé Frost. Grandmother Fox requested that he sing for her.The tribute given, Cranston, Jr proceeded to thank everyone for their presence and then asked all to bow their heads and close their eyes. Then, in the quietness of the moment, Cranston fittingly ended a most memorable celebration with an a-cappella rendition of The Lord’s Prayer.
