You will expend a lot less energy if you keep your head in line with your chest and pelvis while walking.According to physiotherapist Hilary Stoddart of Performance Rehab Limited, walking in this way is the most energy efficient which means you’ll be able to walk longer distances or for a longer time without feeling tired.And whether your walking purely for relaxation or for exercise, you’ll be burning more calories if you’re walking longer, and that’s always good for your body.A physiotherapist for over 30 years, Ms Stoddart said the benefits of walking are not limited to calorie burning.“Walking increases core stability, increases heart rate, improves cardiovascular efficiency, improves strength in the lower limbs, maintains joint mobility and improves bone density,” she said. “It is certainly good for those with osteopenia (the precursor to osteoporosis) and those at risk for osteoporosis.”And it’s long been proven that regular moderate walking decreases the risk of developing Type Two diabetes, as much as more physical forms of exercise.Studies in Britain have also shown that regular moderate walking increases life expectancy and correlates to a reduction in medical expenditure, especially in men over 40.
